Foot & Ankle Pain Management

Foot and ankle pain can have a significant impact on mobility and quality of life. The feet are the foundation of the body, and dysfunction in this area can contribute to pain in the knees, hips, and lower back. Chiropractic care can help manage a range of foot and ankle conditions and address the biomechanical factors that contribute to them.

In short: Spirit Chiropractic clinic treats foot and ankle pain caused by plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, Achilles tendinopathy and biomechanical issues like flat feet or high arches, using a five-step process of assessment, diagnosis, hands-on adjustment, rehabilitation and progress review.

Evidence-Based Management Approach

Spirit Chiropractic takes an evidence-informed, patient-centred approach to managing foot & ankle pain. Treatment is always preceded by a thorough assessment to ensure the right care plan for your specific needs.

Assessment & Screening

A thorough examination of the foot and ankle including orthopaedic testing, gait analysis, and assessment of foot biomechanics. Screening for conditions that may require imaging or podiatric referral.

Diagnosis & Care Plan

A clear explanation of the source of your foot or ankle pain and the role of biomechanics. Your care plan may include recommendations for footwear, orthotics, or activity modification alongside chiropractic treatment.

Hands-On Chiropractic Care

Adjustments to the joints of the foot and ankle to restore proper alignment and movement. Combined with soft tissue therapy to address tight plantar fascia, calves, and other contributing musculature.

Rehabilitation & Self-Management

A targeted program of foot and ankle strengthening, mobility exercises, and balance training. Includes guidance on footwear, self-massage techniques, and activity modification.

Progress Review & Prevention

Regular monitoring of your foot and ankle function, with progression of your exercise program. Prevention focuses on maintaining foot strength, appropriate footwear, and addressing biomechanical factors.

What to Expect

Your first visit includes a thorough assessment of your foot and ankle, including gait analysis. Treatment combines joint adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and a structured exercise program. Recommendations for footwear or orthotic referral may be provided if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with foot and ankle pain?

Yes. Chiropractors assess foot and ankle biomechanics alongside gait, then use joint adjustments, soft tissue therapy and targeted strengthening exercises to reduce pain and restore movement.

Can chiropractic care help with plantar fasciitis?

Yes. Care typically combines soft tissue therapy for the plantar fascia and calf muscles, joint adjustments to the foot and ankle, and a strengthening and stretching program, alongside footwear or orthotic guidance where needed.

Is chiropractic treatment safe for an ankle sprain?

Yes, once the acute injury has been properly assessed. Care focuses on restoring joint mobility, rebuilding strength and balance, and addressing any lingering instability to reduce the risk of re-injury.

Why does my foot hurt most in the morning?

Foot pain that is worse first thing in the morning is a common sign of plantar fasciitis, where the plantar fascia tightens overnight and is then stretched suddenly with the first steps of the day.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for foot or ankle pain?

No referral is required in Australia to book a chiropractic consultation. You can book directly online.

My ankle is hurting after a sprain. What should I do?

Protect it for a day or two, keep it elevated, and start gentle movement as pain allows. Get an X-ray through your GP or emergency department if you couldn't take four steps straight after the injury or there is tenderness over the ankle bones.

Why do my ankles ache at night?

Common causes include overuse during the day, arthritis and tendon irritation. See your GP if both ankles are swollen, the pain comes with numbness or burning, or a calf is swollen and tender, as these can have medical causes.

Can a chiropractor help with foot pain?

We can assess how your foot, ankle, knee and hip work together, then use joint mobilisation, exercises and footwear advice. If you need orthotics or nail and skin care, we refer you to a podiatrist.

Is chiropractic care for foot and ankle pain covered by Medicare?

Medicare can cover part of the cost if your GP decides you have a chronic condition (usually present for six months or more) and refers you under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan. It covers up to 5 allied health visits a year, shared across all allied health services. At Spirit Chiropractic, returning plan visits are bulk billed and the first plan visit has a gap. Private health extras may also cover part of a consultation, but not for the same visit as Medicare.

How much does a chiropractor cost for foot and ankle pain, and can I book on a weekend?

At Spirit Chiropractic a first (comprehensive) consultation is $150 for 50 minutes, standard follow-up consultations are $90 (20 minutes) and short consultations are $60 (10 minutes). We're open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and on Saturday by appointment only. We don't offer after-hours appointments.
